About Saitama University
Saitama University, which is the only national university in Saitama Prefecture, was founded in 1949 when the Japanese educational system was reformed after the war. It started with two faculties; the Faculty of Literature and Science and the Faculty of Education, and has developed into a general university with 5 faculties and 4 graduate schools, after additions and consolidations of some faculties. The University now offers programs not only for Japanese students but also for international students and total of about 9,000 students are enrolled.
The campus is located in the quiet suburban area of Saitama City, the capital of Saitama Prefecture, which is a place with easy access, about 30 km to the north of central Tokyo.
The University has exchange agreements with several universities abroad to implement its commitment to keep doors open for the international community. The members of the University community, who include more then 500 international students from 47 countries and areas, are proud of their active academic and student exchanges




STEPS (Short-Term Exchange Program in Saitama)
STEPS is a program for international students from our partner universities to study in Japan for one or two semesters. It offers semi-intensive language classes and lectures in English in a variety of academic fields.
No prior knowledge of Japanese is required to join this program and to study Japanese arts and sciences, improve Japanese proficiency and have intercultural experiences.

The STEPS program has the following features:

  1. You can study in Japan and obtain Japanese higher education in English. No prior knowledge of Japanese is required.
  2. You can spend one to two semesters in Japan while enrolled in your haome university and transfer the credits you ern in Saitama.
  3. You can improve your Japanese in semi-intensive language classes

Details of the Program
The STEPS program consists of three types of classes:

  1. Lectures on some aspects of Japan and Japanese sciences
    You can learn about Japanese culture, history, society, economy, science, technology and much more, from experts at saitama university. All the lectures are given in English. The lecutere topics will include the following:

    - Japanese Traditional Culture
    - Management System of Japan
    - Introduction to the Japanese Economy
    - Modern Japanese Society
    - Urban Engineering
    - Technology in Japan
  2. Japanese language classes
    Japanese language classes are taught in 3 different levels from elementary to intermediate. You will be placed in a level that is most appropriate to your needs, and take about 10 classes (90 minutes each) a week. With this number of classes, you can expect to make a significant improvement in your Japanese proficiency. By the end of the programm, you will find yourself speaking, listening, writing and reading Japanese comfortably at a much hihger level.
  3. Intercultural communication classes
    In this class, you will meet Japanese and other international students studying at Saitama University. It is a workshop in which you learn by taking part in discussions, field works and other activities.
    You cann experience intercultural communication, learn from each other and raise your intercultural awareness, to become better intercultural communicators.

    In addition to the above classes, students with enough Japanese proficiency can take classes in Japanese, with their supervisors's permission.
